16 INCH TYRES

The 16 inch tyre can be designed as a highway tyre for SUVs and 4x4s that require maximum ride quality and road holding. It can also come as a more specialist off-road tyre and is popular with 4WD vehicles. Though in general the 16inch tyre is a total all rounder and can be suitable for sedans and city cars as well.

The description of 16 inch refers to the final number on the alphanumeric digits that describe the measurements of a tyre. These last two digits sometimes with a decimal number at the end are specific to the diameter of the tyre. The first measurement, (three digits), is measured in millimetres and refers to the width of the ground-facing wall of the tyre. The second measurement, (two digits), and sometimes a letter as well, refers to the ratio, (%), of the side-wall to the width of the ground-facing wall. The letter is a further specification relating to tyre construction or speed rating.

Your tyre size is listed on the sidewall of your tyres or in your vehicle's manual. It is presented as an alphanumeric list, with each number or letter representing a specific dimension of the tyre.

Here's what some of these numbers and letters mean:

(225) TYRE WIDTH:This number measures the tyre's width from one sidewall to another in millimeters. For instance, a 225/45 R17 tyre is 225 mm wide.

(45) ASPECT RATIO:This is the number following the slash. It represents the height of the tyre's sidewall as a percentage of its width. So in a 225/45 R17 tyre, the sidewall height is 45% of 225 mm.

(R17) RIM DIAMETER:This is the diameter of the rim in inches. A 225/45 R17 tyre fits on a 17-inch rim.
